The Beauty of Fusion

KIMU’s Way of Fusion

KIMU design is constantly inspired by our Asian cultural heritages, philosophy and lifestyle. We aspire to reshape our heritage with western aesthetics of our time in order to create cultural balance within our design objects. We are inviting you to rediscover conventional everyday ordinary and turn it into extraordinary.

It is the contrasting peaceful and dynamic qualities of The New Old Light that sets KIMU onto its journey of discovering new souls in old living objects. The traditional form and function of an oriental paper lantern meets with western design aesthetics and transforms itself into a beautiful new shape for modern lifestyle.

After a two-year absence from the international exhibitions due to COVID-19, we are finally back with new designs of the New Old Light collection, including floor lamp, wall lamp, new table and bedside lamp, designed from the East & West fusion perspective and a wish to provide flexible choices for interior lighting design.

When vintage interior meets modern design: à la maison x KIMU

This seasonal campaign is centered around the idea to explore the glimmer and chemistry when vintage interior meets modern design. To visualize it through a series of editorial pictures, we collaborated with à la maison, a quaint and welcoming, albeit fantastical space located on the ground floor of an over fifty-year-old townhouse in Taipei where people can come together and share home cooked meals prepared by friends and guest chefs.

à la maison is owned by designer Eugene Yeh who is famous for his eclectic, East/West fusion design approach. And KIMU’s lighting serves as the transition when eclecticism morphed from an architectural style to a home decor theme. Eventually, we form a stunning harmony and a new kind of Asian aesthetics that can be practiced by anyone who wants to incorporate pieces from different periods and styles.

The Container of Light

KIMU’s paper lantern lights: the container of light

Light is invisible, untouchable yet changes the way we perceive the world. KIMU’s the New Old Light collection is an electrified interpretation of the ancient lanterns invented in Asia nearly 2,000 years ago. The New Old Light aims to combine cultural difference into cultural balance and to create new possibilities for your life. Users can switch the lighting effect from direct light to indirect light by simply pulling down the paper lantern lampshade. We called it ‘the container of light,’ which gives the invisible light a poetic silhouette that can be seen and touched. Today, paper lantern lights are once again favored for their organic, modern feel that works with most any decor.

Rice Ball

Inspired by the traditional Asian food, rice ball, Rice Ball Light is KIMU’s first attempt to combine and visualize “lighting” with the sense of smell. Light, which is the same as smell, is invisible, untouchable yet changes the way we perceive the world. Through lighting design which we called “the container of light,” KIMU elaborately collects the invisible lights into different materials and shapes, making it be seen and touched. It is the mutual cultural memories and the pleasing silhouette that makes Rice Ball, available in table and pendant light, goes well with a wide range of interior spaces.

East Meets West

The New Old Light (S)

The New Old Floor Lamp is created as an extension of KIMU’s classic paper lantern series that fulfills our desire to offer flexible choices for interior lighting design. The minimal linear silhouette, paired with a paper lantern lamp echos KIMU’s new/old, East/West fusion design approach. Both practical and aesthetically pleasing, users can adjust the height of the stand to create different scenarios. A brightly shining crescent in your space.
